The Millay quote also made me think of morning cartoons...
...and "The Sweet Hereafter" again... where only the "lame" are spared entrance to a Neverland of Peter Pan-like perpetual childhood. For they already live in or have transitioned into the "adult" world...

I wonder if you understand that all of us, Dolores, me, the children who survived, the children who didn't. That we're all citizens of a different town now. A place with its own special rules and its own special laws, a town of people living in the Sweet Hereafter. Where waters gushed and fruit trees grew, and flowers put forth a fairer hue, and everything was strange and new.
