I guess it's an unspoken feminist statement? for me, it just means either I"m tired of shaving or it's winter.

No, I haven't read the book or watched the series.
And I don't get the European/ hirsute "look" either. I guess everyone wants to express their own "authenticity". I suppose I'm more comfortable in my own inauthenticity. At least that way I can duck the harder questions...
