Fantasyland

"It is only through fantasy that the subject is constituted as desiring: Through fantasy, we learn how to desire." - Slavoj Zizek, "Looking Awry"

"Fantasy renders and sustains the structure of the forced choice, it tells us how we are to choose if we are to maintain the freedom of choice - that is, it bridges the gap between the formal symbolic frame of choices and social reality by preventing the choice which, although formally allowed, would, if in fact made, ruin the system" - Slavoj Zizek, "The Plague of Fantasies"

"Fantasy works both ways, it simultaneously closes the actual span of choices and maintains the false opening, the idea that the excluded choice might have happened, and does not actually take place only on account of contingent circumstances." - Slavoj Zizek, "The Plague of Fantasies"

"Fantasy if the means by which the subject maintains himself at the level of his vanishing desire, vanishing inashmuch as the very satisfaction of the demand deprives him of his object" - Jacques Lacan, "Ecrits"

"Everything we are allowed to approach by way of reality remains rooted in fantasy." - Jacques Lacan, "Seminar XX"

"Human reality is constructed on a previous foundation of hallucination" - Jacques Lacan, "Seminar VI (Desire and Its Interpretation"

Did you watch the debate last night?

Nope. Did you?

I'm enjoying watching the worms squirm, though.

I watched the last half. Every time Trump speaks, all I can think of is President Comacho from Idiocracy.

He's really just a male beauty pageant contestant.
And he tries to be a bully.

I did like Marco Rubio somewhat, and Carly Fiorina. Chris Christie sounded the least like a politician, in my opinion.

Rand Paul looks good on paper... :p

Ted Cruz...ugh.

It all seems like a big joke.

I still think Rudy Guiliani would've had a chance.

I'm still in anyone BUT Jeb mode. Carly's the closest to me "economically", but I fear that even she doesn't go near far enough in the "smaller is better" department. And there's a still long way to go before the Iowa Caucus' in Feb. 2016, and a lot can happen between then and now. Both Jeb and Ted both recently kicked-off ad campaigns in Iowa and NH. Ted's trying to kill Trump. Jeb's trying to pretend he's an only child. Neither is likely to do their reputations any favours.

I don't know what you guys have against Trump. The world needs a clown...to show it a mirror, even a broken mirror, perhaps.

FJ, the similarities to Pres. Comacho are there.

NPR did a story last week about caucasians now being the minority in Texas. See? Comacho was right! We're going extinct. :p

nicrap, it's not just Trump that I have a problem with...it's the fact that so many people would vote for him.

:-)
